DIY Roof Measurement Tool — Measure Your Roof from the Ground

Calculate your roof area from simple ground measurements. No ladder required.

What You Will Need: - Tape Measure (25ft or longer) - Paper and Pen to note measurements - Level (optional, for pitch measurement)

How This Works: 1. Measure your home's footprint (length times width) from the ground 2. Determine your roof pitch (slope angle) 3. We apply the pitch multiplier to calculate actual roof area 4. Get your total square footage for accurate estimates

Step 1 — Measure Your Home's Footprint: Walk around your home and measure each exterior wall. For simple rectangular homes, measure length and width. For L-shaped or complex homes, break it into rectangular sections. Measure from corner to corner of the foundation.

Roof Overhang: The overhang is how far your roof extends past your exterior walls. 12 inches is typical for most homes. Options: 6 inches (minimal), 12 inches (standard), 18 inches (extended), 24 inches (deep overhang).

Step 2 — Determine Your Roof Pitch: Roof pitch is the slope or angle of your roof, expressed as rise over run. For example, 6/12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.

How to measure: Place a level against the roof from a ladder or inside the attic. Mark 12 inches from the roof surface on the level. Measure straight down from that mark to the roof surface. That measurement in inches is your pitch. No level? Estimate by comparing your roof angle to visual examples or check your home's construction documents.

Pitch ranges: 2/12 (Nearly Flat), 4/12 (Low Slope), 6/12 (Standard), 8/12 (Steep), 10/12 (Very Steep), 12/12-16/12 (Extreme).
